With an iconic bluesman as the owner, Buddy Guy’s Legends draws blues fans from all over the world. Located behind two hotels in the South Loop neighborhood of downtown, you would expect the club to be constantly filled with big-eyed tourists—and it is. However, this doesn’t take away from the fact that Legends supplies some of the best live blues performances in the city and the country as a whole. The layout is spacious, with two levels and dozens of chairs and tables, but the place is usually packed to capacity so this point is barely noticeable. A full-service kitchen dishing up Buddy’s native Louisiana cuisine helps lend the space more intimacy, with the gumbo and fried okra conjuring images of late-night juke joint parties. The décor illustrates the distinction of Buddy’s career, with Grammys, a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame statue and an assortment of signed guitars, including instruments from B.B. King, Carlos Santana and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Compared to the relaxed layout of typical blues clubs, the seating setup is a little different at Legends. Although you can buy tickets at the door, most national acts sell out in advance, and seating is first come, first serve, no matter how far in advance you buy your tickets. What this means is that if you don’t buy your ticket in advance and arrive at least two hours before the music starts, you will be standing the entire night, which is best spent dancing. Each night starts out with an acoustic set that showcases local talent before the opening and headline acts. Legends is open to all ages for lunch and free acoustic sets until 8:00 p.m., when it turns into a twenty-one-and-over club.
